Body size, habitat quality, and territory defense in Bachman’s sparrow

چکیده

Abstract Many wild populations of animals conform to the ideal despotic distribution (IDD) in which more competitive individuals exclude less from high quality resources. Body size and aggressiveness are two important traits for resource defense, they positively covary so that larger usually aggressive. Using Bachman’s sparrows, we tested hypothesis birds aggressive thus able compete best territories. We found males were aggressive, fledged at least one young. However, did not find consistent relationships between habitat characteristics. Our results suggest sparrows meet most predictions IDD. Frequent ecological disturbances, such as fires, might disrupt IDD or make it difficult detect. Additional studies needed test disturbances territorial behaviour.

Territorial defense, territory size, and population regulation.

The carrying capacity of an environment is determined partly by how individuals compete over the available resources. To territorial animals, space is an important resource, leading to conflict over its use. We build a model where the carrying capacity for an organism in a given environment results from the evolution of territorial defense effort and the consequent space use. The same evolution...

Territory Size in the White- Crowned Sparrow (zonotrzchza Leucophrys) : Measurement and Stability

The problems involved in reliably measuring bird territories and estimating their stability have often been ignored by ornithologists. Observers frequently use the same technique to measure territories as that used by Noble (1939) and other pioneers. Typically, the observer carries a map into the field and notes where a subject bird flies, sings, or has aggressive encounters during a given peri...

Trophic Niche in a Raptor Species: The Relationship between Diet Diversity, Habitat Diversity and Territory Quality

Recent research reports that many populations of species showing a wide trophic niche (generalists) are made up of both generalist individuals and individuals with a narrow trophic niche (specialists), suggesting trophic specializations at an individual level. If true, foraging strategies should be associated with individual quality and fitness. Optimal foraging theory predicts that individuals...

Uropygial gland size correlates with feather holes, body condition and wingbar size in the house sparrow Passer domesticus

The uropygial gland is an organ exclusive of birds that secretes an oily substance, the uropygial secretion, the functions of which are still debated. One of the proposed hypothesis is its possible action against chewing lice (order Phthiraptera), a group of avian ectoparasites that feed on feathers, causing different types of harm. However, this hypothesis lacks support. The present study anal...

Body size affects the spatial scale of habitat /beetle interactions

We used abundance data and the program Focus to determine the spatial scale at which 31 species of longhorned beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) respond to forest habitat amount. We predicted that the spatial scale at which species respond would increase with body size, and that species using ephemeral larval habitat would respond at larger spatial scales than species using more stable larval h...
